Can't figure where some of these nutty answers came from!
Do you realize on a small block chevy, the bolts which hold on the water pump are through drilled into the water jacket? also some of the head bolts also? Yes, the threads seal the pressure of the water.
Coolant pressure only runs 13-16 psi which isn't really a lot, but it can still seep out of the threads. Use an "anaerobic" sealant on the threads. I like to use regular pipe dope, (not Teflon tape). It works great.
If I understand, you just drilled out the hole too far correct? Just tap it out, (coarse threads ONLY if aluminum), dope up a new stud and put it all back together. It will be fine.

You never drill into the water jacket! If you looked under your vehicle, you might of noticed that there are old spots where there used to be a bracket to hold your manifold.
As for the bolt and putting thread lock on the threads, let me say this --- Is it a junker or a beater? if you answered no, then is it a nice ride or do you need it to get to point A and then to point B? If it is a nice ride or a classic or You really need this car to get around --- then take it to a professional.

you may get away with drilling and tapping it but be sure you use the right size tap drill, a 5/15-18 bolt needs a tap drill of letter f bit and a 3/8-16 needs a 5/16 drill3/8-24 use a q drill hope this helps you. its important to use the right size drill because you will be trying to stop a leak with the bolt that goes in the hole. be sure that you use a good sharp tap and what ever you do don't brake the tap off. Taps are hard and brittle and they break real easy. good luck.

As near as I can make out you drilled into the jacket. If that is right the best I could suggest is to use RED or ORANGE Silicone sealer in the hole and on the bolt..... you have a lot of heat there....LOCKTITE makes a special sealer for that type of problem but I don't remember it's name.. Most auto supply stores do not carry it.. It is a specialty item, industrial use stuff. Regular thread lock, blue, red, or gray, will not do a thing for taking up space and sealing water leaks...Not made for that..........

AHHH you drilled into the water jacket?? I dont think tapping it would help. The heat would expand it and cause lots of problems. Take it to a machine shop. They may be able to do something but if not you will need a new block. I guess you could try JB weld, but I wouldnt risk it.

BTDTGTTS. You MUST drill and tap the hole, then use PERMATEX Hi Tack or some kind of sealant on the threads. A Heli-Coil type insert WONT WORK.
