Your 12 year old will watch as much T.V that she is allowed to. I have two very active boys 4 and 8 and I allow them to watch about an hour a day. They would sit there all day if I let them but it is my job to make sure they don't. At first a child may fight it and really act bored and mad they can't watch TV, but just like anything else they get used to the rules and gt over it. 30 - 40 hours is way too much and life experiences are passing her by. Read go outside, ride bikes, play games with her bake with her. It is more energy for the parent when the child has restricted TV but is is so worth it and rewarding. My kids are either outside on their bike or inside playing with blocks, drawing , painting or baking with me. I always have music playing that is age appropriate. I am exhausted but I am making amazing memories for my boys and myself.

Doctor's say 2 hours a day is the absolute most time to be spent watching TV or playing videogames. They say this mainly because it encourages excercise and healthy habits. Reading is a good alternative, as is joining some kind of team ( skiing, basketball). Maybe a little more than two hours, like three and a half or four ( it is winter), is appropriate if they get enough other stuff in.

I think leaving him home alone is not very bright. Take him to dinner with you and Mr. Right. If Mr. Right wants to have a dinner date and movie with you, remind him you have a twelve year old son. If you continue to leave him alone no good can come from this. He should be your first concern at all times. As he gets older there are lots of things he could be addicted to. He could have others come over while you are gone. He could have the feeling that "no one cares" for him. Now is the time for you to help him through these troubled years. Don't give him the opportunity to drink, drug, sex, or get in a gang because no one really cared what he does. If you lose him now he will give you many heart aches before he is twenty one. God can make a way when there seems to be no way. Carry him to church and get him involved. God will help both of you. God has a plan. You just need to talk with HIM

I think you should try to balance the time she is watching T.V and reading a book. My mom said when I was that age I would watch T.V like crazy. She wanted to unplug the T.V so bad and finally, she did. Then I didn't want to watch T.V anymore because that wasn't an option for entertainment. Then after I read a lot a books, she plugged the T.V back in, and I still read books and occasionally watched T.V...
I hope this helped you!
