When I was a kid around 7 years old, I went to the small drug store where I lived and was all excited because I had a dollar and some change. Well...at this particular little drug store, they had this huge rack of cheap toys. At the top of the rack was the sign proclaiming "All toys only $1!" Being a young kid and just being able to read, I took that sign pretty literally! With the biggest smile you ever saw, I started taking loads of the toys up to the counter all happy that I had just the right amount of money to buy them all. Unfortunately, the old man who happened to own the store wasn't too crazy about me creating a mound of toys on his counter. When he found out what I was doing, he promptly informed me what the sign really meant, which of course meant I could only buy one toy. (He was nice enough to let me have an extra for free.) While I was happy to get at least a couple of toys out of this fiasco, I wasn't too happy to have to put all the toys back! Oh well....the lessons of youth....

Yes, long ago. It was the most embarrassing thing. It developed into a phobia. Whenever I go into the store now I check 3-4 that my money is still in my wallet.

I've done it twice in the past week at my local shop, got served by the same person too. I'm not normally such a div but my way of dealing with it is just to not really give a toss, it's not that bad being a bit stupid sometimes.
Just as long as it doesn't continue for too long.

yeah, not often, but if i overshoot the budget when i get to the checkout i've had to put stuff back before.
i used to work retail and i can tell you that there's no shame in it either. lots of people do it.
if i am only spending $200 that week and i spend $250, well our budget can't work like that, so $50 has to go back!!
take care.

yeah, twice I think
when I see people in that situation, I usually offer to pay for the item or two, about half the time they let me
it always feels really good, especially around the holidays to do that, especially if the person is buying only 5 items

Yes. Most embarrassing. These days I try and add it up in my head before I get to the checkout.
