An iPod is a type of mp3 player (a brand of mp3 player) released by Apple. Due to it's popularity many mp3 players are generically referred to as "iPods". For instance, in the UK vacuum cleaners are often referred to as "Hoover's". Not all vacuum cleaners are Hoovers. Art knives are often referred to as "Stanley Knives", even though not all art knives are Stanley knives - Stanley knives are a type of knife.

It's the same with iPod's. Many people just generically refer to mp3 players as "iPod's", even though there is a huge range of other ones (like the Zune, iRiver, etc...)

They're they same. They both play mp3's. Just, that if you buy an mp3 player OTHER than an iPod, you can't use iTunes to sync your player and create and export playlists. You can still download songs using iTunes though, just have to save them in another folder to transfer over to your non-iPod player. Does that make sense?
