It depends on the usage of the noun.

Although the nouns are plural, in most instances the usage is singular. In the example, "Economics is important business," the plural noun (economics) takes the singular verb (is). However, in the example, "The economics of the situation are overwhelming," the plural noun (economics) takes the plural verb (are).

I always try to think of what the noun represents in my sentence. If I'm using it to describe a unitary concept (politics is generally thought of as a single concept) then the singular verb form would apply. If I'm using the noun to describe multiple things, I use the plural verb form. Hope this helps.

My interpretation is that despite ending in the letter "s", both "politics" and "economics" are used as singular nouns. They are not pluralized.

I cite the following sentences as examples. Economics is an academic course of study in which one can earn a university degree. Politics is a strange and dirty business. If there are any English teachers or majors out there, please verify!

Politics is and economics is ...
this is because some nouns look and sound plural, but are really singular elements...another common example is "The news is on tonight at ten"... news is singular, but looks and sounds plural
