About a month ago I bought a Creative zen M. It is really nice!! I have the 30GB size. The battery lasts really long (12hrs audio, 4 hrs video), you can play tv shows, movies and audio books. The only thing I didn't care for is that I had to buy an A/C adapter to charge it because the USB charger that comes with the unit is really slow. Also you will need a case to protect it from scratches. It has won numerous awards. I bought mine for $240. You can get them now for $199 on buy.com. If you can afford more, go for the Zen W. It has the same features, but it has a bigger screen for viewing videos and pictures.

Any flash memory based device will play MP3's. Stay away from Apple as you'll be spending a few hundred bucks more than you really need to. Look at Creative Labs, Sony, brands like that as they give you the most bang for your buck.
