Next time you send a question, mention which iBook (5 years old, brand new) and which operating system. Put your operating system install CD in the slot and start up the computer while holding the C key. Does that seem to make it boot to the CD? Do you still have a black screen? If so, restart and hold these 4 keys:
Option + Apple + R + P. Hold them for several seconds and listen for a repeat of the musical chime that comes at startup

If you don't hear any chimes or you never see any light on the screen, reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) by following the Apple Support article that applies to your particular iBook (see link below).

You might have hit the fn F-whatever button that switches it to external monitor. Hook up an external monitor and check out the settings. If it's an old G3 ibook it won't be worth it to replace the display.

Your screen went dead. It happens. Go to the apple store or get a new screen.

You could try taking it into an electronics store to get it checked out.
Maybe the screen is just broken. (probably if it's an older laptop)

this would look extraordinary, yet I had a similar concern on my Powerbook G4, and after doing a permissions restoration, it went away. attempt that. (stated that you boot from the deploy disk to finish that).
