People are already against the war.
I'd also like to say that Rangel's idea is to limit the impact on the inner cities and rural areas (they are the areas that incur the most deaths of soldiers in Iraq). It's a noble idea.
As for those that say it's an "all volunteer" military, perhaps we should let those men and women who do not want to go to Iraq to stay home with their families. Many of these people join out of necessity. So since they were practically forced to join (or stay unemployed, in many cities) and they assumed the president would be smart enough to not get them involved in a quagmire, they should be allowed to defer deployment.

Reinstating a draft would be social, national and political suicide, no matter where your philosophy leans (I am 85% conservative).
Todays military is all-volunteer. that means they WANT to be there and CHOSE to join. They were not forced. Therefore they are more likely to be self-starting and self-motivating. In the draft days, there were so many people trying to get out of doing duty they came to be called draft dodgers. With a attitude like that there would be no way a dreftee who didnt want to go would be so nearly as motivated to put his 100% into the job.
I support the right to a conscientious objection deferrment, to a non combat duty.
People are only against this war because they are used to getting results in 30 seconds. This is the generation of microwave dinners and Headline News. The rate of loss in this war has been a near trickle (sorry cindy sheehan, you are not corect), compared to loss rates in WW2 Korea and Vietnam.
Patience, people....Patience. The the fighting men and women do their jobs so they can come home as heroes.

I agree. Now we have about 140,000 troops in Iraq. And about 100,000 private contractors are also there. Some of the contractors are doing the same jobs that military men and women are doing for ten times the salary working for corporations with no-bid contracts gouging tax payers in war profiteering by principals of those companies who are being enriched beyond belief. An unknown number of private contractors may be foreign nationals from third world countries being exploited shamefully -- paid lowly wages and housed in dreadful circumstances. Details of private contracts are closely held secrets as a matter of "national security." I am not paying a war tax and my sons do not have to serve. Bush is not paying a war tax and his daughters don't serve.
Sharing the burden of war would permit sharing of the responsibility of war. As it is, Bush alone is responsible.

It is a certainty that those who want America to go down in flames will use the Draft as a propaganda weapon against the military and our government.
Oddly, it is Democrats like Charlie Rangel who are trying to bring back the Draft.

The majority of Americans are already against the war, it really isn't necessary to butcher their sons and daughters to get their attention.

What it would do, however, is show us exactly who the

MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.
Thank you very much, while you're up!!!!
