I had my car fixed at a garage. The day I went to pick it up, while I wait for my car to be pulled up for me to pick up, I asked one of the mechanics a question to fill in the silence while we waited. The dialog went like this:

Me: "Hey, do you have a brother who owns a towing service? I had my car towed one time and I remembered that he looked just like you".

The mechanic went to speak to the other guy in the shop (who was the guy that towed my car) who was working on fixing another car. And then he went off saying how much that guy didn't look anything like him.

The mechanic: "He may act like me and try to be me. But he ain't me." And then he continued for a bit and refered to me talking to the towing guy. "He (me, the asker of this question) just insulted me without even knowing it.". And I detected that he was upset

So can you explain to me how I insulted him?

I guess he must hate the guy or something. Or he was just being a jerk.

mechanics can be sort of weird. All the fumes I think.

Obviously you hit a nerve with that question. Let's suspect that either there is a rivalry between the brothers, or, he was just having a bad day. Chalk it up to one or the other and realize that you were just at the wrong place at the right time.

Don't worry about it. You might have struck a cord but without the intent to insult anybody. At least you made an effort to make small talk. Most people either ***** and moan about how pricey repairs are and try to get a discount.

You are fine. The other person must have a poor reputation which he is aware of,yet you are not. I think it is wonderful that you care so much about other people's feelings. NEVER CHANGE!
