While Irfan Pathan has been doing well with the bat, his bowling has been below par. Since India wanted to play with 4 best bowlers, there was no place in the Team for Irfan only because
of his batting as 5 specialist batsmen were available. Hence he could not be included in the playing 11. The only option to include him in the team was sacrificing one opening batsman and make him to open the innings. If Team management opt for that option, they may have to face lot of criticism, as 2 specialist openers are available in the team.

Very simple.
1. You can not play 8th batsman and field with only 3 bowlers. After a long time, selectors took a tough decision of dropping him to balance the team.
2. These days Irfan has completely failed as a bowler. He is more a batsman and less a bowler. His role though is more a bowler and less as a batsman.
3. let him practice and get his confidence back. Let him work harder on nets and he should talk to Wasim Akram to sort out his problems.

Ganguly,Kumble and Laxman are back in India team.
Irafan performed well in first class match against rest of africa. That doesn't mean he may perform in test match vice-versa. He played below expectation in one day matches. Thats the only reason he opted out from the team. He may get another chance if any other player will fall because of performance. He is just 22 yrs. old, lots of cricket he has to play. Let seniors to play few test match, selectors will sort out non-performers and will give chance to Irfan.

Simple reason, Irfan was doing goods only with the bat not with his bowling but Team packed with 7 batsmen thought they need a bowler not another batsman for the 1st test, so they left out Irfan, since only 11 can play

Players need to be rotated and rested. Also the south african pitches probably didnt suit him.
