i believe that its human nature as they want to get on first, its like driving a car have you ever been in the car with someone and they just have to be the car in front,of all the other cars, on a highway or other roads its weird but that is my explanation and thoughts...happy dayz

before actually answering your question may I point out that your statement is slightly incorrect - it is partially true that the plane cannot leave if a passenger with a boarding ticket does not show up and board the plane. The captain of the plane can request the luggage handlers to remove all luggages from the plane to identify those luggages (if any) which belong to the missing passenger; once the luggages are found they are removed from the plane and then the plane can proceed with its journey without that passenger.
TO answer your questions; people often run to be the first in the queue for the following reasons:-
◘ Try to get or avoid a particular seat (example: supersticious persons avoid row 13)
◘ If their luggage is overweight and they need to pay for the excess they will have ample time to do so.
◘ People who panic (by nature) would want to get things in place at the earliest (example my father is one of them- he runs to the queue to get rid of his luggages as early as possible to avoid any mishap of luggage not showing up upon arrival to destination).
◘ Some people run to the queue with no purpose at all.....
◘ Others rush so that they can put their hand luggage right upon their heads (they will have the freedom to put their h luggage at their leisure).......
◘ the rest ........

Since seat numbers are allocatged, no one will occupy your seat and as such there is absolutely no need to rush up. The only reason I can imagine is that people want to avoid standing in the que in the plane to occupy their seat and also to get the overhead bins to keep their hand baggages.
However, no-a-daya most of the airlines follow a system of making ladies with children, old people, handicapped people to board first.

Assuming seats are already pre-assigned:
People bring more carry-ons then there are usually room for in the overhead. As the plane gets full, the overhead over your seat gets full or people put their bag forward of where they are sitting so the only overhead space available is furthur in back. Having to walk against traffic when everyone is getting off the plane is not fun.

I don't know why, it's a mystery. The majority of airlines pre-book seat positions anyway so it doesn't make a difference. Perhaps they don't like the idea of squeezing past those on the outside if they have window seats or in the middle of the centre row.

you cant have a favourite seat on a plane, when you book a ticket you're assigned a seat number and that's where you have to sit. On board you can swap with another passenger if they're willing otherwise you cant do much about it. You get what you're given!

I prefer a window seat to shoot pics (however its most of the time cloudy or forbidden). I hate to be in the middle because if feel jailed.
But you are right, people hurry up after they got their boarding ticket as if somebody was going to steel their seat...

I think it is because check-in time is so early that people are really fed up of waiting, and when the flight is called for boarding it's like "Hurray! At last! Let's go!"
In my experience people don't really seem to be trying to get in front of others, they just want to get going.
My husband can't be bothered with all that, and usually waits to be last - and I get really impatient!

yes, this attitude is how I got the seat with the p!ss on it next to a pile of vomit on the carpet on a packed airline i won't mention easyjet's name just in case anyone's already booked a flight with them.
i wouldn't blame the staff, it's the management that gives them impossible deadlines to meet for the turnaround

Seats are already assigned before you get on a plane, they probably just want to get on cuz they are impatient. Or they want to get on so they can get settled before the plane gets crowded.
