Of course it's sad. The tragedy of human genocide - nearly complete in it's execution.
The although we can never know for certain , the 1st contact circumstances of the "discovery" of the new-world are probably the one of the worst incidents of extermination of a race in human history. Based on conservative estimates, of 15-20 million dead, the decimation of the pre-columbian peoples would fall somewhere between "The Great Leap Forward/Cultural Revolution" - [1948-1969] and "The Purges" - [1934-39] see http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/dictat.html
But it's a story told in layers really.
In a way it could be viewed as a debt or burden upon those Europeans whom colonized the Americas.
The most grevious part is the first part.
The inadvertent introduction of plague or smallpox to the New World by the conquistadors and other explorers eliminated (by most estimates 60-80% of all the indigenous inhabitants.) In North America, this pattern repeated itself not once but it is estimated at least 2 additional times, before determined settlements began in earnest.
Had the plagues not annihilated the pre-colubmian populations, the Americas would never have been settled quite the way they were.
This paved the way for those with superior technologies and methods of fighting war to be largely successful.
The second layer that of the intentional elimination of indigenous populations was not effectively taught in our schools - back in the day. The "Trail of Tears" or other such "relocations" were mentioned only as another fact in history. The US policy of "Manifest Destiny" was actively considered a good thing by my high school history professor, [who was rather opinionated and felt that "certain" peoples were inheirently superior to others, so we defintely had a slant to our history classes]. I can't imagine it's improved of late either.
After reading a few books on the west and the US of the 1800's and basically inadvertently re-educating myself, I was startled by one uncomfortable realization about the US and more broadly the rest of European America is that our forebearers accomplished nearly to completion what Chancellor Hitler tried to do.
So there's that...Which they don't teach you in school, I don't suppose.
It seems perverse now in talking about it but perhaps it was idealized romanticism of history and the past coupled with sufficient distance to disregard the unfortunate facts, that you get the "Cowboys and Indians" play games of childhood in the Americas.
Perhaps in 200 years, children will Play "Hutus and Tutsis" or "Jews and Germans" but that's not likely.
Because the Tutsis and the Jews both survived and have had access to the levers of creating historical records. This didn't prevent their near extermination but they both were able to immediately find a place in the human history of attrocity and a willing ear to that misery.
No such luck for the Indians, I don't see anyone talking about compensation for being in a relocation camp or recompense of any kind for them.
For the most part Indians were decimated long before a tell all book or sympathetic news-reel could be made about their dilemma.
Furthermore, those Indians and other indiginese who remained into the beginning of the industrial and which live on in our collective lore, were were really the last remnants of their civilizations, previously devastated by inadvertent 1st contact diseases.
Today culturally speaking, the modern Indians struggle on - of course, trying to retain their cultural identities and languages as nobly and best as possible...I for one wish them success in their efforts.
The best book on this subject in my recent memory was probably "Guns , Germs and Steel" by Jarred Diamond.

And the same story repeated itself in Australia with the Aborigines.
But it really does not matter how they died.
If they had fought back...they still would have died.
What the difference with that and the last two World War were millions of people died?
What's the difference with the 6 million of Jews who died during World War 2 for just being Jews?
As long as there are two men in this world...they will try to kill each other so that they can steal from the other. That's the legacy of human kind.
Since we have the Internet...it has become a favourite past time for people to judge others...
They never think for one second that everything they have today...is the direct result of people dying for it in past wars...
Ask yourself where would we be today if we had never conqueer America and left it to the natives...
Would we be living in a better world?

The asian, local american, black and white race did not create the ones matters as a entire. A few participants of that race created the ones matters. You are not able to give a contribution the matters one man or woman who occurred to be of a precise race, did, to all people of that race... If that made any feel...

The fact that they were tricked and mudered, were given disease infected gifts and were forced away from their homes. I know that part I hope there's not more because I am European and American, and basically I know European's did a lot of bad thing's and American's did too but oh well. I treat everyone like equal's because that's how everyone should be treated

What's the truth about them?
Oh, sorry, after reading the other answers I understand. Yes, I do know that many of them were killed, and pushed farther and farther west until they had nowhere else to go. I was a little bit confused with your question.
