Did you cut the end off your tree before you put it in the base? Sap can solidify on the cut end of a tree very quickly. I've heard that you should always recut the end right before you put the tree in the base so that it will continue to take in water.

Sometimes it can be from the heat. Do you have your heater on
all the time? It'll dry it up really quick. Next time buy it in the middle of the month (December). That's what I do, cause that's
same thing happened to us, so now every year I would buy the Christmas tree on or around the middle of the month. As some
people keep it until New Years Day, then out the door. That's long enough for me. This year we didn't buy one, because were never
home, were always at my daughters house so whats is the point
of spending money on a tree if were not going to be home. Instead I put the Christmas lights on a corner shelve where I have
my father's and mother's and families pictures. It is sentimental
to me, my father passed away so that is why I picked that place.
I know that not what you were asking but I just through that in.
Sorry.

Technically, your tree was dead once you cut it. So, what you are really asking is, "Will my cut tree hold on to it's needles if we harvest it 5 days earlier than usual?" Well, that's the difference between about 25 days and 30 days. I'd say that isn't significant and that the tree will be fine. I'd preface that statement by saying that several other factors come into play. For instance, the type of tree you cut has a lot to do with how well it holds up. Also, giving a cut tree water will prolong its needle holding capacity. The placement of the tree in the house matters, as well. You want to avoid hot spots and areas near heater vents. Mostly, I'd say the type of tree is most important, though. If you cut the same tree that you did last year, and last year's tree did fine, then I don't think the five days will have a huge negative impact on needle drop.

It may not be getting enough water. Try trimming about two or three inches off the trunk and placing it back in the water. Keep the tree stand reservoir full of cool, fresh water, and see if that helps.
There also used to be a product called "Tree Fresh" that helped the tree retain its needles and stay green. If that's no longer made, I bet someone at a tree farm or garden shop could give you the name of a similar product.
Here's hoping your poor tree doesn't end up looking Like Charlie Brown's! ;-)

You need to water your tree 2x a day with about a quart of water. Also you need to keep the room cooler
I hope you have one of the tree stands that hold a gallon of water.
You need to no run the lights very long because they dry the braches of the tree and the needles can get very dry and catch fire.

i'm not sure how you stop a tree from dying but next time you should get an artificial tree. Some of them look realllly natural and you can use it year after year.
