It absorbs grease from food, impurities in the air, etc. Depending on the type of plastic you can completely whiten it again. I know for sure that the older soft Tupperware can be completely transformed to looking new again by soaking it in a mixture of chlorine bleach and water. The softer the material the better the chance of the bleach working. I keep a tub of bleach water in my basement for just that purpose. Besides whitening it also takes out "stickies." You don't have to worry about it going bad because the bleach keeps it from getting foul.

What exactly is it?
If it's your keyboard you can take the plastic pieces off and wash them in your sink. I just did that yesterday. You don't have to take all the keys out, but if you want to you can throw them in a jar full of warm water and soap to shake up until they're clean.

You can mix water and bleach and put the plastic in it. This method definitely will work. I use it to get rid the black dot on sealant.

You can try soaking denture cleaning tabs in it overnight. Works almost all the time, great for thermos too.
