I am a single mom and my kid is still very young. Growing up as a kid we did not have any Holiday/Christmas traditions that carried on to the present. What are some of your holiday traditions that you might suggest to start and how long have you been doing them? ............Keep in mind we are catholic.

Going to midnight mass is always a good tradition for catholics.. When my mon was small, my grandmother started a tradition thatis still carried on with my grandkids. Just before bed, every child got to open one present, chosen by the parent. then have hot chocolate, take a bath and off to bed. The present is always new pyjamas to welcome the celebration fo Jesus' birth, since Jesus was born when everybody else was asleep. I still buy pjs for my kids and sons-in-law.

I'm also Catholic. What I would do would be to look at your heritage and pass on traditions that way.

I was brought up with the Austrian traditions as my mom was born in Vienna, Austria. We never had the American version of Santa Claus.

We celebrated St. Nicholas' Day on Dec. 6th. We each got a small gift - if we were good. A stick was given to those who were bad - as a way to remind them that Christkindl was coming.

On Dec. 24thh, we awaited the Christkindl (the Christ Child) who gave gifts to those children who were good/deserving. We would all gather in a room - singing carols, talking etc. We would wait and after the gifts were left, Christkindl would ring a bell. We would then open the gifts. After that was a traditional dinner and then Midnight Mass.

On Dec. 25th, we got stockings left by elves who traveled with the Christkindl. I'm really not sure how that figures into it. I think that Mom created that part so we would "fit in" and get something on Christmas Day. This day was for visiting family and friends.

I've been celebrating like this for 36 years. My mom died 5 years ago but as long as I'm alive, I will carry on this tradition and will pass it along to the next generation.

The traditions of Christmas in the United States have gone by the wayside.. It is no fun anymore.. The stores here start decorating in August and music(Christmas) by September.. It is ALL about MONEY and NOTHING about the Christmas spirit.. For that reason, I do not celebrate Christmas and if I really wanted to celebrate Christmas, I would go to some country like Honduras.. to Chile.. to any country in Africa where they celebrate Christmas as it should be celebrated.

We always got to open one present on Christmas Eve and it was always PJ's. I had one friend who's family made Jesus a birthday cake every year. They didn't sing happy b-day to him or anything like that, i guess they just ate cake in his honor..that's weird i guess
