I just moved into a 2/2 apartment with a roommate and some food items have disappeared along with an envelope with around $60 within a few days of moving here. I'll spare the details, but I'm almost 100% certain that I did not misplace these items. I actually asked her about the coffee, and she denied seeing it. She actually seems cool, and someone I'd like to get to know/talk to otherwise, but suspecting makes me not want to interact with her. I've thought of two options, confronting her directly about all of it right now, or planting alittle money to confirm my suspicions. Either way getting a lock on my door. This really sucks because basically I am stuck with her for a year. Any other advice/insight?

I guess the only way to be sure that it's theft and not your poor memory is to do what you've already thought of - plant a few items. But write down the item, where you put it and when you put them there, then seal it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. If the stuff disappears, give the sealed letter to your roommate and don't say another word about it. It'll have the postmark on it from before the stuff disappeared.

If the food is in your room, then it is B.S. for her to be getting to it. However, if it is in the kitchen and all she used was a serving or she just helps herself you just need to tell her that she has the next batch or something. Let me give you a good piece of roommate advice right now, communication is key. Also, you will never have a roommate who will never touch your food, it doesn't happen. To circumvent getting mad about a roommate using your stuff just talk to them and let them know as long as they replace it soon then it's cool for them to hit up your food every now and then but not always.

As for the money, there's no telling what happened because you spared us the details but if its her, get the lock you talked about and just try to be civil. You have to live with this person for a year. Talk with her and say, "look, some stuff has gone missing and I don't want to accuse you or any of your friends but I am getting a lock for my own safety." It can be misery to live within someone when the tension is high and it sucks not being able to relax in your own home. Communication, communication, communication.

Lastly, if this chick's a thief you might want to keep anything of great value at your parents or another firend's house. Thieves have no conscious and will still stuff and lie straight to your face. You could come home one day and your lock may be broken and a watch may be missing and you could confront a thief and they would all like, no I don't know what happened, all the while hoilding a crowbar and wearing your watch. F***King Thieves.

My best guess would be to take inventory of all your belongings, including food that you buy. Then show it to her so she'll know that you've made a list. When something is missing from the list, then you'll know what happened to it. Showing the list to her may or may not deter her, though. Also, planting a little something sounds good. Some people have gone so far as to plant a hidden vid camera to document what goes on when they're not home. But, if that's not an option for you, you could try labeling your stuff too. Labelers aren't too expensive. Good luck!

Try planting money and installilng a video camera to watch it, then when its gone review the feed from a computer. Its expensive, yeah, but it will provide you with absolute proof. Then confront her directly.

The lock for your room is a good idea and you should confront her directly (once you have proof).

You should get a hidden camera and leave some stuff around to see if she'll steal it. You could also just leave some food in a specific area and see if it stays there. Good luck!

my son bought himself a "bar fridge" and put it in his room and bought a new keyed door lock and set up his computer with a web cam that would go off..with motion..

maybe it is someone the room mate lets in..
amazingly..landlords even sneak in...
he loved his new house..exact same
2/2 with a fitness room and a pool..he hated to think of leaving cause he was close to shops and work..
he's happy now..and it is almost a year now..
