Absolutely start applying. Sure, it's a waste of money to apply to a school you will later decide you don't want to go to, but it's more of a waste to pay for the visit to a college you didn't get accepted to.

It can't hurt to visit a campus. But yes, during break there will be noone there to talk with and try to "sell" you on there school. But almost all of the information they're going to tell you is already out there somewhere and you could find it on the Internet or through the school's website. Visiting a campus could still make you fall in love with the layout though, say Duke, georgeous campus. But layout, architecture, and landscaping doesn't really have anything to do with education, does it?
Here's the deal, what does an application cost to submit, $20-$50? If you're parents can spare a couple hundred dollars for a few applications, it can't hurt to get them in as early as possible. Just because you get accepted doesn't mean you have to go so you could always visit after mailing the applications in.

I think that you should visit the campus. Whether you visit before or after you apply really doesn't matter, but you should visit BEFORE you decide where you are going to go. I would compare it to buying a house. You are going to be in college for at least a couple years. You wouldn't just apply for a home loan and then tell the loan officer to just pick one out for you. Same as college you need to feel like you fit in and enjoy being there. If you do it prior to applying though you can save some money. I know that some college charge to apply and if you decide prior to applying you can save a few bucks for more beer....

You should definitely visit the college first and do it on a day when school is in process. Bring your parents with you then you can enter classrooms and the dorm and just see what the atmosphere is all about. it's probably a good idea to meet some of the students already attending and ask them what they think are pros and cons.

Neither. First you visit the site. Then you check out any possible scholarships. Then, if all goes well, you apply about three times. That way, you have better chences of them seeing you. Well, good luck with college!

Well.. of course.. if you have a chance... an opportunity.. the money. then a visit is by far the best.. After all.. you might be spending 4-5 years there and you would want it to be somewhat pleasant in most all aspects.

Apply. You can always turn them down later if you're accepted, but deadlines are not always easy to meet.
