I currently have a computer with the current specs, 1 GB (2X512MB) DDR 400 RAM, AMD 64 3200 (Socket 939), an ATI X600 (256MB). Unfortunately it is an NEC computer with their motherboard and an ATI chipset.

I want to upgrade to an X2 4200 or better and eventually an Nvidia 8800 GTS. Are there are any barriers to me doing this as it is a computer produced by NEC?

I'm finding my machine simply can't hack it on games like Call of Duty 2 (it only runs smoothly at 800x600 and I have a 19 inch monitor). Please help.

Note that I really don't want to reinstall Windows.

that should be fine .. i would redo the operating system and be sure to use sp2 with the dual-core ... and i myt take a look at an opteron as an alternative to the 4200 ... u may need to upgrade powersupplies also unless ur 500w or better now ... actually u would see good gaming results with just going to the new video card, its mostly in the card and that processor isnt so bad, in fact u could prolly get a new mobo that is overclockable and push it to 4400+ speeds with some decent memory ... either way .. get the new video card first and i'll bet u'l be happy with it enuff .

You can almost always replace the whole motherboard, chipset, ram, video card and just attach the old hard drive, speakers, keyboard, monitor, soundcard, modem, ethernet card and mouse. A new box to put it all in is pretty cheap ($50 or less for a decent tower, unless you get crazy with features.) Do a little research & see what type of connections you have with your current set up (like, is the hard drive an SATA, ATA or IDE?) and make sure you get compatible hardware in the new system.

Yes, you can do this. Socket 939 is good for X2.

Make sure to download the dual core optimizer from AMD's website as well as the latest dual core driver for XP :
