This is most likely a scam called the 'Nigerian 419 Scam', named for the Nigeria federal code it violates. This has been going on since the 1990s, but it is now relatively easy and cheap due to the rise of the Internet. I have received scams emails myself, and most of them usually state that a wealthy individual with my last name has died, and I am to contact a bank so that I can claim a portion of the (millions of dollars) proceeds. It often involves small transaction fees of a couple hundred dollars.

These scammers often get 1-2 replies per 1000 emails sent and now involve small criminal rings that will work several different countries. Some people end up losing thousands of dollars due to the fact that once they get someone hooked, they keep asking for more money. Worse yet, some people have been lured to certain countries and kidnapped or murdered.

Erase any email that looks spurious or too good to be true and never send a stranger any money.

Anyone asking you send them cash back from either a money order or check is scamming you. Never, ever spend money from a check or money order from someone you don't know until your own bank has officially confirmed its authenticity. Otherwise, you will be liable for paying the bank back.
