emachines... in this case... memory card... did you by any chance try installing this stick while the computer was plugged in and turned on? if so UNPLUG THE THING. install the memory in the free slot, not the one currently used first... make sure it is well seated cuz on the emachines mobo it can be difficult to fit it in just right, cuz if you press it in and lock in the white pins one at a time, it can shift on you before it locks in to place. whenever you doubt that your memory is correctly installed or if the PC recognizes the card... go to RUN, then type in "dxdiag" that will tell you all the major hardware stats and it will show you the RAM as well. also try going to the control panel and click on the add hardware, after the card is installed. then see if the PC can find it, last but not least... make sure the pin count is the same. it can be the right type but I have found RAM cards that where identical in size, and description, but they had a different pin count like DDR400 184pin or DDR2-400 240pin. Also read this:
Memory Details About Your System
Your eMachines T5048 only supports modules made with a specific type of chip. Should you find what seems to be the exact same memory elsewhere for a lower price, it is very possible that the cheaper memory will not work in your computer.
I bought a 1GB Kingston KVR DDR400 PC3200 for my emachines T-6000.... no problems at all. This card only cost me $124.00. Also know that your PC can handle two sticks of 1GB for a total of 2048mb of memory
512MB DDR400 Module
512MB 400MHz DDR400 PC3200, 184p DIMM
1GB 400MHz DDR400 PC3200, 184p DIMM
Manufacturers: Samsung, Micron, or Infineon
That could be your problem... this here above is the EXACT card for your PC...not SDRAM.
good luck

I don't know if the memory is faulty or just doesn't like the other stick. If you are booting all the way into windows and then you get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), then it is most likely your memory because the upper regions of your ram do not get accessed until Windows is loading.
Try it with just the new or 1GB stick and see what happens.
If the machine will boot fine with either stick of memory in it, but not with both of them, then try getting another stick just like the one you have now.

it must be a kind of issues, yet a touch bit experimentation and time will sparkling issues up. i am going to assume you're attentive to setting up memory modules and performance made constructive the clips snapped into position after pushing down on the memory. First attempt booting off a unmarried new memory stick in the first memory module slot. If that works, attempt a similar try with the 2d module (also in the first slot). If that works, the memory itself is reliable. look on the memory modules. there is probable a label with the speed - some thing like PC2-5300, or it will be in MHz (e.g. 667). placed the SLOWEST memory in the first slot. placed a similar sized module in the 2d slot, and the different pair in slots 3&4. maximum motherboards get their memory speed settings from the first module, and note it to all others. you will be able to set the memory speed on your pc's BIOS at startup, although the automobile placing is fantastic for most purchasers. If the first module occurs to be swifter than the others, your pc would overdrive the slower memory playing cards, inflicting memory blunders and crashes.

Cary,
Check your Bios to see if it is detected there. If not then check to see if your MotherBoard and Bios are capable of such a upgrade.. Good Luck

you are using ram that is unmatched - your bios settings may help...turn off spread spectrum...if available and read your MB book about installing ram and what your ddr channels are...
