i like playing fast paced drum beats, preferably fast punk rock like pennywise. their beats on the hi-hat and ride are 16th notes. my wrists get very sore after playing a couple of measures. is there a way to improve the strength in my wrists? should i just keep playing as much as i can to improve? also, would hitting a pilow (i know what it does) help playing these fast beats on the cymbals?

Just like anything else, the only way to get better is to practice. Your wrists are getting sore because you haven't built up enough strength in them to keep up with the kind of drumming you want to do. Its like weightlifting--you can't walk into the gym and bench 350 lbs on your first day; you need to work up to it. Similarly, the more you drum, the more strength you'll build up in your wrists and the neuron pathway (the signal from your brain to your hands that tells them to hit the high-hat) will become clearer, allowing you to play faster.

Instead of playing along to a song, I'd recommend buying a metronome and playing to that. It will help you measure how much faster you're getting while making sure you keep accurate time (the most important job for a drummer).

Hope this helps.

DANIEL R IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY BUT FOREARM STRANGTH IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT TAKE ALOT OF THE WORK OFF THE WRIST. I ALSO RECOMMEND TAPING YOUR FINGERS WITH A CANVAS TYPE TAPE I'M LUCKY MY WIFE IS A NURSE SO I HAVE LOTS OF TAPE. WHEN BLISTERS ARE ON YOUR HANDS THEY CAN HAMPER YOUR PLAYING TIME AND PRACTICE TIME DUE TO PAIN.GOOD LUCK
