Rainwater is as pure or as dirty as the air that the clouds flowed through day after day. There is a lot of impurity in the Earth's atmosphere these days. Have you ever heard of acid rain? If you want to know if it is safe to drink rainwater or cook with it, the answer is probably. But, of course, you wouldn't catch it from the downspout. The roof of your house is filthy with bird droppings and such. You would need to catch it from free-falling rain using a clean container and get it inside immediately after catching the rain so no bird... well, you get the picture. Even so, you are taking a risk so I don't recommend it.

In the U.S. and in most developed countries, cities provide "clean and safe" tap water but many people feel compelled to filter the tap water anyway.
