Yes you did see a Comet .
I'm an astronomer andwe've been tracking it here at the observatory. Comet Machholz (C/2004 Q2) is the comet you have been looking at .

Right now the Gemini meteor showers are going on .

There is the Geminid meteor shower. A meteor is a shooting star that flashes very fast across the sky in a fraction of a second. A comet is an icy asteroid that would be visible in the sky, apparently not moving at all, for many days at a time, like the Moon, only not as bright.

you probably saw a meteor shorer because a comet will appear to be stationary. Each subsequent night it will have a different position and the angle of the tail may appear to change as well.

It was a meteorite (a Geminid), not a comet. Comets last for weeks or months at a time; they don't enter our atmosphere unless we're about to die.

there was actually a meteor shower wednesday, i couldn't see it though because of all the friggin lights in the city!
