I agree with you. In 1980, when I was 12 I saw it the first time and until now I am not bored to see it again and again. Carl Sagan is one of my heroes in science.
I think that The Elegant Universe is in the same mood that those Sagan's series. Difference is that it is shorter and it just takes the superstrings topic as principal point of study.

PBS did a very good series a few years ago called "The Astronomers". My public library has it on VHS. There are also numerous excellent episodes of Nova that are available.
