if you were in a pub or resturant, etc, would you tell them to put it out? And do you think this law will be enforced?

I'm Irish living here in London but I'm used to this as it happened in Ireland a couple of years ago. I am sure the law will be enforced. It is enforced in Ireland and Ireland is much more laid back than Britain so I'm sure it will be! Personally i would not tell anyone to put out a cigarette as it does not bother me (unless I was with a child). i am a social smoker and will find it hugely inconvenient as I love having a cigarette with my pint! It has been detrimental to the pub trade in Ireland as many smokers now stay and drink at home where they can light up in peace. It probably won't be as detrimental here as there are not as many smokers but the trade will still suffer. People will begin gathering outside pubs to smoke (as we do in Ireland.) Annoying especially when it's freezing and raining and all your non-smoking friends are inside, but still fun as you get to meet people and 'smirt' (a new post-ban word in Ireland meaning 'smoke and flirt' !)

Anyway, I'm sure it will be very beneficial to us all in the long run!

I can't see it working, people will continue to light up whenever and wherever they like. Here in UK the law has not been passed yet, but our main Hospital in the city I live has banned smoking in the grounds and staff are not to be seen smoking when they are in uniform, but I see them doing it stood under the "No Smoking" sign in their work clothes the same as ever before.
Patients and visitors light up in the lifts on stair wells in the toilets and outside the main entrance and there is nobody telling them to stop.
I'm far to fearful of speaking out myself to these offenders, as one who suffers greatly with my lungs, smoke is a painful irritant, but I am in need of the care I receive at the hospital and the risk of angering staff or fellow patients is too great, for I know only too well the vengeance of some people.
The same thing happens with the ban on talking on the phone whilst driving, the vast majority of people still do it, because they know that nobody is going to say anything or penalise them in any way.

This law has been in force in Scotland for a while now and wow, it works! People don't generally break the law!

I would say something, or leave it to the enforcers to tell them, they go around checking all places and there is always the management too!

A lot of places have gone smoke free. And there are usually by law officers that will give tickets to restaurants/pubs that allow people to smoke. So ultimately it will be up to the people who run the restraunts/pubs to ask people to "butt out" to avoid fines.

Scotland have already introduced this ban on smoking and it works, people are telling the ones who forget, and light up. as to the enforcement this works to, you see" there are people from the H S E who have the authority to enter any premesses, and if they catch you they take photo evedence and you will be fined £100 and whoever is in charge will be fined £500 Ex Manager, Barman, supervisor, owner beleave me! just that fact in its self is enough

I hope this is the United States. You can't smoke in resturaunts here , which is good. Yes I would ask nicely to put it out depending on who it was. If it was a bum or a big guy thats 6"8 and has huge arms and has an angry look on his face. I wouldn't bother

It is totally enforced in most places in California. Bar owners have lost lots of money because of it.

I think there should be places for smokers and I am NOT a smoker. I'm concerned that they'll go postal and kill everyone! ;)
