How many issues and what issues did "The Captain" appear in? Kindly enumerate. Answers should go beyond the regular Volume 1 Marvel Captain America Issues. This should include "What if", cameos in Thor, Iron Man, etc.

Kindly state references.

Mark Gruenwald's "The Captain" was actually Captain America (Steve Rogers). Cap resigned his commission with the army because of corruption in the government (partially stemming from the Nuke debacle in Daredevil). Because he resigned his commission, and his rank and costume were based on his military background, he was stripped of both the costume and the shield. The run was from Captain America 336-350.

Rogers decided to keep fighting the good fight and created the new identity as the Captain. He received a shield from Tony Stark (though it was not an Adamantium/Vibranium mix, but rather a Vibranium shield. Cap did mention that it was slightly different than his original shield, but he'd get used to it) in Iron Man (Iron Man #225-232, Iron Man: Armor Wars). This gift came with strings attached since The Captain was at the Vault when Iron Man came to deactivate the Guardsman armors.

After Steve Rogers took back the title of Captain America from John F. Walker, Walker took The Captain's uniform and used it as a government sanctioned hero and as a member of Avengers West Coast. His code name was USAgent, and more recently, his costume has been modeled after the traditional Captain America costume as a member of the Invaders. He may also go by Captain America, though there is a world of difference between the two characters.

The most complete list comes from Comics.org, one of the best resources for comic books on the internet.

Captain America 337 - 350

Iron Man 228-229

Marvel Comics Presents 2

Exiles 9 - 10

JLA/Avengers 4

N.E.X.T. WAVE 1 - 10 (This Captain was a "hero" originally named Captain F*ck. He had his mouth washed out by Captain America)

That's the most complete list I can come up with. It is possible that there are more, and other appearances not in comic books, but fanzines, etc.

You'd better ask Mark Gruenwald that one...
