I'd spend some time with them to see what it is that they want out of life. If their answers were vague or "too good to be true," I'd be very wary. Most homeless people are on the street through no fault of their own, but I don't want to support a professional panhandler, either.
If the person had some goals or hopes in life, I'd help them find a job. That would include buying them clothes for job interviews and the necesary personal hygiene items. If they needed help filling out forms for jobs, assistance programs, etc., I'd help them with those, too. I'd take them to the various organizations that help people who're having a hard time and see what we could do to get them shelter, food, and the necessities of life.
I think most of all, I'd try to be a good friend. I'd take them places for meals or out for coffee, and I'd listen to what they had to say. I don't know many people who enjoy feeling like "charity cases," so if they offered to help me with house or yard tasks, I'd accept with thanks.

First off, I would never give them money.
If I were passing by, as in my car, I have bags with some non-perishable food and bottled water. Truly homeless and hungry people are thankful. People looking for a free handout are not...
If I could, I would help them get on their feet, as in find a place to establish residence and help them find a job. If you have two arms/legs/eyes/whatever and are in good health, there is little to no reason why you shouldn't be working! In fact, you could be missing any of those things and still find a job!

First of all I would pray for them and ask the Holy Spirit what my role in this is...I would then do what my soul directs me to do and sometimes my prayers are enough. I believe that sometimes people are just where they are suppose to be and unless I am "directed" to intervene, I leave God in control......hope this makes sense....BIG LOVE, Kevin
