Smoking is linked to heart disease, lung cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, COPD, emphasema, chronic bronchitis, and many other serious illnesses. Does this give you enough will power to quit?

It is very tough to quit. Have you tried the usual things like the patch, hypnosis, acupuncture, etc? A support group?

I'm sure you will have heard this already, but the first couple of weeks are the worst and then it gets better. When your sense of smell returns, and your sense of taste, you will appreciate that you did quit.

If you ever can get the chance to see the lungs of a smoker beside a pair of healthy lungs, that might be a big deterant. It is pretty gross. Or go to an old folks home and speak with some of the people who have to be on oxygen 24/7 because their lungs are like tissue paper. Those are powerful motivators to quit.

Good luck.

I used to smoke and it was reallt tough to quit but I did it and am glad I did. It took about 1 year to really kick the craving but once I did I have never wanted one since and no craving, even around someone that smokes. My advice is to not go to places where they smoke, avoid people that do smoke and/or ask them to respect your desicion and not smoke around you. Allways be trying to cut back, ween yourself off them. It is is hard it is very addictive. One of my thoughts were that it is almost like something to do, something to hold in your hand and occupie your time. Find something that can take the place, ?, read, puzzles, just something to take your mind off them and give you something to do. I think that is why people gain weight, it is that something to do thing. Good luck and really put some effort into it, you will be glad you made the effort, I did, and I will have much better health and not stink, you have no idea how bad you smell until you stop and smell a smoker, very bad.

Im 13 and still do so =] I dont understand why its immature to suck your thumb, but its not if you say 'I suck my pinkie finger!' Im stopping now. I stopped for a whole year when i was 12. I do it without realising, but somehow i never do it when i have friends over. Theres this stuff that you apply like clear nail polish that tastes really bitter, and that helped me. Stick a bandaid on your thumb at night, or just stickytape, but not too tight! Its about self-contol. Dont just give in when youre watching a movie. Refrain yourself! CHew gum istead, but not too much or it'll give you cramps! IF you do all of whati have suggested, this will help a lot. Theres no use trying to stop if you dont want to. You have to want to stop. Just keep trying =]

I quit because everyone made me feel ashamed to smoke. When all the no smoking laws came in, I felt like an outcast. Maybe if you tell your non smoking friends to make you feel guilty when you go for a smoke. It worked for me, It might work for you.
But I only smoked for 8 years so it is probably harder for people that have been smoking longer.

don't think about it. do anything but don't smoke. go take a walk. or you can do this. smoke ciggarates every waking moment for 2-7 days. then one day wake up and smoke a ciggarate and tell me if you aren't tired of it. but just try not to think about ciggarates and tell yourself you will die in 24 hours if you smoke the ciggarate.

Go volunteer at a general hospital or convalescent hospital and check out the emphysema cases, the lung cancer cases, those with tubes down their throats to enable breathing and note their extreme pain and anguish. That's where you'll be in the not too distant future, fool!

Without willpower you will never quit. You have to want to quit to actually quit. There is NOTHING that will make you NOT want to smoke suddenly.

Unless every time you smoke a cigarette you have a mild heart attack or electrical shock, than you would probably train your body to not want to smoke anymore.

It may sound strange, but never buying the same brand of cigarettes may help, because you are partially building your identity on what brand you smoke. Once you stop identifying yourself as a "Marlboro Man" or "Camel Girl" you may find it easier to stop identifying yourself as a smoker. A lot of it is mental.

My best friend was a chain smoker and she was given Wellbutrin by her dr. and she hasn't smoked since. She said that with the med. she doesn't even crave it and she feels MUCH better. No early morning coughing, etc.

I would try that as opposed to all that gum, patches, etc. b/c you are still gonna have cravings with them.

Did you know that for every cigarette you smoke you lose 25 minutes of your life? Smoking is disgusting. It turns your lungs black, your teeth yellow, and makes your breath smell horrible.
