what is it called, and where can I find a reliable source about the subject? I am fascinated by it and it frustrates me that I can't remember what the study of such ancient pottery recordings is called! Thanks!

have you tried the Mythbusters website? .... you have to go through the Discovery Website first.

well they used it in china. It didn't -record- sounds. They put a large pot in the ground, and then stretched skin over it, then listened for the vibrations of the enemy digging or marching into their city. It worked quite well. Go to the discovery website and I'm sure you can find more info on it.
