I have just had to sign up with an ISP with a data transfer cap having been on an unlimited tariff for the last eighteen months. I have no idea how much data we transfer each month but the limit is 30GB. My ISP is very reluctant to give me access to their monitoring equipment. So my question is: how can I monitor my usage, we have a 4 m/c network thro' an ADSL router, 2 teeenage kids who think bit torrents are 'wikked'...heaven help me!! !!
I have tried a few monitors off Zdnet but they only work when the m/c is online and the monitor is exe'd, discipline and teenagers do not go together. Is there a permanently online monitor site where you can register which also copes with DHCP IP variations, if not maybe there needs to be???...Yahoo could jump in here..Cheers

Hello,

I have the very tool I think you are looking for its called Netmeter Beta 2 and its totally freeware. Download it and install it and it gives fantastic data transfer details for any kind of internet connection.

See here:- http://readerror.gmxhome.de/

This program gives daily, weekly, monthly & yearly data transfer amounts. You can also set a limit and ask the program to warn you if you reach that limit or threshold.

Definately 10 out of 10 excellent.

Check www.tucows.com. That is where you usually find all kinds of software utilities. Another answer might be to use a computer as the monitoring gateway, with a function of toting up throughput. In otherwords: Internet >>>Monitoring computer(gateway)>>> router or switch>>>to all other computers. There is a Linux firewall app which will do this and act as an excellent programmable firewall. Just takes a fairly anemic computer, no need fo hard drive, the program will boot from a floppy. The computer would need 2 NIC cards. One connects to the Internet, the other to your network, usually through a hub or better, a switch. The app is called IPCOP. You can even defeat access to sites you don't want your urchins to view.

Go to CNET communities and place your question to them. If there is anything of the kind, they will know it!
