We Americans aren't taught geography anymore, not like we were used to. Not only that, our society is so egocentric that we don't seem to care about other nations (except for our own capital benefit). That is my generalization, at least.

"crawler" is the answer to your question.
his/her answer sums up the attitude of about 95% of America. Not only would they confuse Budapest and Bucharest, they probably have never heard of them. Note the spelling of "patience" in that answer...
Fortunately the other 5% or so actually realizes that the world is only 5% American and that the rest of the world matters. Those few folks can give you the right answer & at least relate where those two countries are and their importance to our world.

Well, "Bucharest" and "Budapest" do sound somewhat the same, and Romania and Hungary aren't all that far apart. Foreigners do stuff like that vistiting every country-it's not restrictd to Americans in Romania.

Perhaps the names Bucharest and Budapest are similar. I'm Mexican, and I remember that those two are capitals cities of Rumania and Bulgaria, but I have always had a hard time remembering which one is for which country

I believe the issue lies within your sampling. Have you been randomly asking an American? Have you also asked a large number of Americans? In order to be statistically sound to say Americans would say Budapest as capital of Romania, you would need to conduct a fairly large scale experiment.

I'm Chinese... I don't get what you're asking unless you're making fun of Americans... which isn't nice at all. Budapest is the capital of Hungary... I know that after watching the Amazing Race for so long.

Where is the capital of Romania? It's in Romania of course so Romania is the right answer. I'm not American, I'm Dutch.

Heres a question for you who the h*ll cares what or where the capitol of a little p*ss ant country is? Stop bashing Americans (Yeah that's right capitol A) sooner or later our patients will run out and then LOOK OUT because why we answer some stupid question wrong will be the very least of your worries.

They do become easily confused, (ask them the same question in a few hours). Then give them an easy question i.e. Do you know that America has telephones.
