Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another. I think most people confuse that with bigotry which is the intolerance of any different creed, belief, etc..
Usually we think of white people as being racists or bigots, but there is evidence of it in all cultures. Why? In my opinion it's a part of social order. We protect our own at the expense of those who are different. Similar to wolves killing coyotes, albeit a stretch.
And let's imagine that in 10,000 years the races have interbred so much that there is essentially one race. Racism will die, but bigotry will not.
We will be one race, but there will be differences in language, dialects, regional customs... these will be the new parameters by which we are judged and discriminated against.
While we may never be free of it we, as intelligent beings, can choose not to practice it.

I wasn't going to touch this but I'll try. There are many reasons for people's racist feelings. I think allot of it has to do with education, most well educated people are not racist. People who's parent's were racist tend also to think the same way they their parent's do. Also pier pressure, friends co-workers, bosses etc., also influence peoples racist views. It takes an intelligent person not to be or become racist. I was raised in Chicago til I was 11. I had some good friends that were black. We moved to the suburbs, and I missed all my friends black and white. My mom was very racist, she couldn't stand living in the cities because of the blacks, she used a different word. My dad was not a racist he also had black friends. A child doesn't see skin color. Have you ever seen pre-school kids play they All play together and get along just fine. The point I'm trying to make is that I believe it was our parents who shaped our views when we were young. As we got older our friends co-workers etc, helped to mold these beliefs into how we judge each other as adults. So as mature adults we have a choice, to be a racist or not to be racist. I said all that without saying "ignorant", it wasn't easy because I wanted to use it a couple of times. So with all that being said, Racists are stupid!

Yes, I do believe its about fear.
More than that, its about living in a world where you believe only what your family and friends tell you. Since you want to be the "good" person, you go along with whatever they say, because you want "them" to like you. And, as we all know, if you were to speak out about how a racist comment is not right, then guess what?! Your family and friends (or reverend, pastor, copfriend, spouse, boss, the paper boy, you get the hint) will call you a "______-lover," and reject you. You are living out other people's thoughts and feelings, because you are afraid of your own. No one taught you when you were growing up that you are SUPPOSED to have your own thoughts and feelings.
So, racism is really the denial of everything outside the personal sphere of familiarity. Racism is a projection of thoughts and feelings onto a person who actually has nothing to do with whatever is going on in the racist's mind.

Wow. This is the realist question I have read in a while. I am a racist, I am black and I am not a former slave. I am sick of white people looking at me with hatred, fear and disregard for me as a human. I am sick of the fact that when I speak about race in here white people tell me to get over it. I am a racist because the majority of my life I lived around more whites than blacks. I love rap, I speak broken English, I wear baggy clothes, we are different and I accept the difference. But I have been jumped, called the N word so much I thought it was my middle name, overall, my experiences with white people has been horrible. I am racist because it is just as American as apple pie.

Racism is about cultural, economical, colour of the skin difference. When you don`t like people of a certain type such as hispanics or rednecks etc you are racist because it defines that you don`t like they`re culture or way to live...Do you want a proper example? Between christians and muslim there`s hate , rage , mutual disgust because of their culture, they`re rules , what they believe in....
The begging of racism was the colour because the slave and owner relation was the first that happened between people of many( superficial difference)

Racism is not about color ! it is about culture and lifestyle, ! How else would you explain white people doing their best to darken their skin by lying around in the sun !!!!. However it would be very easy to hate someone like KEITH A , He is just the type who keeps racism alive and well !!

FEAR! They don't want to share the world with people not like them. They don't want their kids educated with those "not like them." They don't want their kids associating with someone "not like them."
