Her name was Diane Downs and I know that the book is called Small Sacrifices so that's probably the movie title. My husband grew up in the same neighborhood as her family. She actually went to the same church as he did when he was a little boy. She shot her kids on Old Mohawk Road (we drive on it sometimes) and blamed it on the "Shaggy Haired Stranger". She was CRAZY!
I dunno why someone gave you and I a thumbs down...it really happened. You cited the story almost perfectly. I live in Oregon and a lot of people remember when it happened.

Yep, Small Sacrifices (1989) starring Farrah Fawcett. Remember watching it when I was a kid, and it scared the crap out of me. Went to bed and kept imagining Farrah Fawcett at the window pointing a gun at me. Eek.
