Get all of your drivers ready for your hardware installed on the computer like sound cards ect. If you dint have them. go to the manufactures web site do download them on a rewritable disk.
If you have xp
Insert your xp disk
shut down (backup important stuff first)
restart
XP disk should be running.
IF windows starts instead do this.
shut down. restart. push F2 or F 12 at boot ot run system bios.
Change boot sequence to Boot from E drive. Or whatever your disk drive is designated.
Then the xp disk should run.
Follow the prompts.
It should ask you to format. Do a complete format
now it will create a volume to install windows on your hard drive.
continue the installation process. it will shut down and and restart itself to complete installing .

Once installed xp will install some drivers automatically but you may need to install drivers for sound cards and graphics. do graphics first. restart, then sound. Network cards are next. and so on.

Oh very important. Install a complete Internet security suite before connecting to the net. or you will have done this to no avail.

If your disk was not xp service pack 2. go to Microsoft update and update to the latest version.
