You did not mention which iPod version.
What do you mean "regular charger"? You must have the 5G Video or Nano which only has the USB cable for charging the iPod. It'll only charge with the provided USB adapter (no Firewire connector available anymore) or a wall charger or auto charger from Apple or a third party. The USB charger is Too Slow in charging the iPod.
Some websites sell the wall charger for $8.00 which is very affordable as Apple charges >$30 for the wall connector which used to come with the original iPods through the 4G versions.
Go to eBay or Overstock auctions to find those chargers.
I have some and they work very well and quicker than the Apple USB cable. Keep one for home and one for the office and one kept for emergency in case you lose one. Even the car chargers are relatively affordable at about $8.
There are other devices that the iPod connect to that wil play the music and recharge at the same time but I think you just info regarding a basic charger.

buy an iHome it is an alarm clock, clock, radio! or take the pug to download music into ur ipod and plug it into ur computer and it charges the ipod

Plug in charger into the wall.....car charger.....thats all i know :-)
