It's new, still in box, 300 gigs total. I only need 200 gigs to back up my PC (if it were full),, that would leave 100 gigs for something else,, and I wonder can the PC use that 100 gigs to store a folder from My Documents,, for example,, My Music (which has about 60 gigs in the folder already). Can I transfer the whole Music file to the external drive and use it just like I always do?

You can use Disk Director in order to backup your hard drive. Disk Director is very reliable and fast working partition manager which possesses some additional features like Partition Recovery and Os Selector tools. As for backup I highly recommend you to use True Image by Acronis. True Image can create separate hidden partition for backup purposes only also using this software you can backup you media library, applications' settings and Outlook files even to ftp servers. Since both Disk Director and True Image are manufactured by the same you can get sufficient Christmas discount in case you buy both these products.

Yes, you can do this with 3rd party software like Partition Magic or Disk Director. I prefer Acronis Disk Director Suite and recommend it to you. It is a user-friendly program that allows you to resize, move, copy, split, and merge partitions without losing any data. In addition Disk Director has a number of useful features.
