On the market there is a Casssette adapter with a wire that comes out of it with a head phone jack that plugs into Ipod , Cd player, Mini Disk player. This then lets you play it through the car radio. Obviously no good if you have a CD player in the car. But this is not as good as the official transmitter.

It all depends on the stereo in your car. If you have an aftermarket deck in there, head over to the manufacturer's website and see if they have any iPod related products that are compatible with your headunit. Alpine, for example, has new headunits that can directly interface your ipod with a special cord. Song info display on the stereo and it even charges the iPod. Sounds extremely clean.
If the stereo is stock (the original deck), the options run a bit thin. Some decks support an axillary-in (headset plug style input), or even control the ipod like the Alpine decks do. In any case, research the year and model of your car on the internet for options.
I've found that Crutchfield.com is also a good place to start to get info on those options.
Have fun and good luck!

Yeah, I have an iTrip too and it works great. I got mine from Best Buy. You may need to find another radio station to transmit the music from your iPod. Make sure you use a station in which you hear NOTHING - static or vague music won't work. Trying a FM station in the low 70s should work.

If you have a tape deck, the tape transmitter is much better since it uses a wire.

I found that when using such devices, the volume on the iPod/MP3 player had to be set to max for best results.

If you can find the right sort of cable, you can plug one end into the AUX channel in the car and the other end into the headphone jack, you should be able to get it to work.
