I think it is a little sad to see all the responses that say this is perfectly safe! It shows that true informed consent is NOT being used by these obstetricians.
The most accurate answer is that no one knows for sure if these scans, especially these new ones being done so early in pregnancy, are causing any harm or not.
What is KNOWN about ultrasound is that it has two side effects which happen, especially when exposed for prolonged periods - by prolonged I mean for more than about ONE MINUTE. Ultrasound causes "cavitation', which is the production, growth, and dynamics of oscillating bubbles in a sound wave which occurs when ultrasound emissions interact with gasses in tissues and fluids. This results in bubbles within cells and the oscillation of existing tiny gas bubbles outside the cells - and more. All of this causes the second side effect - heating of the cells and tissues, including bone. If you've ever been to physical therapy or a chiropractor for a muscle strain and had them use ultrasound to warm the muscle you will know what I am talking about.
So what does all this mean to your baby? No one knows what effect this can have on human babies. Animal babies have shown harmful effects. They know that baby boys exposed to ultrasound have a higher incidence of left-handedness. Not that that is bad, but it does show something is going on.
The ultrasound waves also produce vibrations that the baby's ears can pick up as very loud sounds.

I agree with the person who asked why she did the ultrasound when she new it was too early? Maybe to pay off the machine?

No, It will not hurt the baby. I was 5 weeks pregnant when they did the same thing to me. The did that just to make sure they werent missing the baby. Sometimes you can see better with a trans vaginal ultrasound. The doctor would not do anything to harm your baby. They have been doing ultrasounds for years. I have had lots of ultra sounds and I have a very big and healthy looking baby. good luck

Actually where I live the standard is 0 ultrasounds.
Why would your OB do one when it is too early to see anything, that is just STUPID.
However, ultrasounds are considered "safe" when used appropriately, at the lowest level for the shortest amount of time.

Not at all. I had a vaginal ultrasound at five weeks because my OB was concerned that it was ectopic.

No worse than gentle sex, which (unless your Dr. has told you otherwise) is perfectly safe. The radiation from the ultrasound will not harm your baby in any way.

You can go as early as you want. There is no harm. They do the vaginal US to see everything better.
