if you're planning on an LA "quick trip" while travelling to oakland i'd highly suggest a plane ticket down there. Driving to LA is just too far for a "down-and-back" trip. But if you so fancy a journey from the bay area to LA then you can take either one of three routes. hwy 1, hwy 101, or if you really want to be bored then take I-580 to I-5. 101 and I-5 will average about 6-8 hours depending on road conditions. hwy 1 will take forever but you will see the most beautiful coastline in the world. Oakland is at least 8 hours from LA, depends on where you are going. It's near San Francisco in Northern CA. LA is in Southern CA.
