Tanith Lee:
The Claudia Chronicles (Wolf Tower, Wolf Star, Wolf Queen, and Wolf Wing)
The Dragon Quintet
Piratica

Tamora Pierce (pretty much anything by her):
Lioness series
Trickster’s Choice and Trickster’s Queen
Protector of the Small Series (First Test, Page, Squire, Lady Knigh)

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares

Speak by Laurie Anderson (this is about a girl who has been raped and is scared to talk about it)

Louis A. Meyer’s Bloody Jack Adventures

Celia Rees – Pirates!

Piers Anthony’s Xanth series

Gregory Maguire’s books: Mirror Mirror: A Novel; Confessions Of an Ugly Stepsister: Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Anything by Juliet Marillier

Sherwood Smith’s Crown Duel

Hallelujah! I'm so happy to hear that someone else doesn't like melodramatic teen girl books with titles like "The A List" or "Hot Chicks of Valley High". I love books with substance.

Here's a list of some that I really liked when I was that age:

Anything by Terry Pratchett- that guy is hilarious. But especially The Wee Free Men and A Hat Full of Sky. Gotta love the Nac Mac Feegle! Also the very funny How I Paid For College by Mark Acito. The Broke Diaries. Certain stuff by Francesca Lia Block- but not all of it, and not most of her new stuff (mainly all that's in Dangerous Angels, and Girl Goddess ..9). Diane Duane's So You Want to Be a Wizard, all of Harry Potter, of course. War for the Oaks. The Giver. Crooked. Speak. Annie on my mind. The Year They Burned the Books. Book Bat. Leaving Fishers. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, in both her longtime and still going Alice books (funny, heartwarming, sweet, take your pick), and what used to rivet me as a kid- the books about Witch's Sister, Witch Weed, etc. The Truth About Janie and its sequels, and the Out of Time, Prisoner of Time, etc. books about Strat and Annie. Artemis Fowl series. The Silver Kiss. Come to Me By Moonlight. The China Garden. Cut, You Don't Know Me, Asylum for Nightface, The Woman in the Wall, Owl in Love, Shadow, Shadow by Joyce Sweeney, Beginner's Luck, Dark Sister, Indigo, The Tooth Fairy, Wither, Rats Saw God, Rules of the Road, Johnny Voodoo, Babylon Boyz, Tenderness, I Want to Buy a Vowel, Hidden Talents, Kissing Doorknobs, Confess-O-Rama, Things Not Seen, The Raging Quiet, The Tiger Orchard, Spirit Window, Hangman's Tale, Nightmare Academy, Stephen Fair, How I Spent My Last Day on Earth, Snake Dreamer.

I'd try to give you more specifics and plot details about each, but since I really don't know what you're looking for (romance? sci-fi? fantasy? action? mystery? comedy? a mixture?), I'll just leave you knowing that all these are really good.

Especially "How I Paid for College" by Mark Acito. If you read one, read that one . . . it's too, too funny for words.

I work in a Children's Library and these are ones I would recommend, all 3 are quite different stories with complex themes.

Ann Cassidy: Looking for JJ is about a young girl who killed her best friend when she was 9 and her battle to remain anonymous when released from prison. Fantastic story.

Berlie Doherty: Dear Nobody is about a teenage relationship which results in pregnancy and its affects on both the girl and boy. Not as heavy going as it sounds and told from the boy's point of view. It is one of my favourite books.

Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials Series is soon to be released as a film. Alternative reality story for fantasy fans and people who just enjoy a good complex story which may or may not have a happy ending.

Go Ask Alice. It has an anonymous author by the way. Its a WONDERFUL book and i absolutely couldn't put it down. Dreamland and The Truth About Forever are great books by Sarah Dessen. And if she's read Go Ask Alice and she likes it, get Jay's Journal. It also has an anonymous author and the characters are very similar. After is another good one, but i dont remember the author.

I don't really like the gossip, girly girl books myself, so I stick to thriller and other adult books. The teenage books just don't work for me. My favorite author if Jasper Fford. At least... I think that's his name, lol. He writes a series called "Nursery Crimes." I know it sounds really lame, but it is actually a very good series. Currently, there is only two books in the series, and here is what they are called; "The Big Over Easy", and "The Fourth Bear." These books are located in the adult section. They are reasonably thick, and it took me, like, 2 weeks to get through each one. Trust me, these books are soooo good.

The City of Beasts by Isabel Allende. Great book. She writes great adult fiction too but this is good for teens. Set in Amazon rainforest, teen boy and girl as central characters. Girl is very cool.
