I watched a discovery channel show (yes, I'm a geek!) about a volcano that can erupt any second now and kill all living things in a matter of days. It will kill everything by blocking out the sun with ashes and the rain will be completely acidic. Why have we not heard about it before? Why has there been no other mention about it before? And is there anything we can do?

Maybe.

It is doubtful that any of the "caldera" will erupt any second without warning, but they do have the potential to erupt eventually. The Yellowstone Caldera seems to blow every 600,000 years or so, and it has been 640,000 since the last big eruption, which buried much of North America in several feet of ash.

The Long Valley Caldera in California is similar, and has been more seismically active lately.

Oh, you must be referring to the show on "supervolanoes". Yeah, I saw that too. We haven't heard about it before because people are ignorant of its presence and basically don't believe it. I learned about it 5 years ago, but at that time nobody thought it was possible. Now we know it is not just possible but probable, but people are now just ignorant. There is nothing we can do except live our lives to the fullest.

I should point out that it probably won't kill all living things. It's erupted many times before and didn't kill everything then (or else I wouldn't be typing this).

no,there is no possible way that all life will be eraticated by one mere volcano. there are only three possible ways life will end. meteor, San Andreas fault earthquake, and cooking ourselves by the effects of global warming. if people still survive global warming the polar ice caps will melt and get rid of everyone else in a giant tsunami.

You're not a geek... I watch that show, too. Yeah, I saw that. I hope you know that this is just a thought that might happen way in the future. And that's why we haven't heard anything on it. Because WE DON"T KNOW!!! That's right I said it: WE DON'T FRICKIN' KNOW! NOBODY KNOWS!!!!!
