I just moved into my own place and everyone kept asking when the house warming party was going to be and what they should bring. I've never even heard of a house warming party until just recently and I'm not sure what the proper procedure or what is expected? I have a fairly small one bedroom with limited parking and tons of friends and family who wish to be invited. Any ideas? Advise? Recipes? Games?

have an open house,, say for between 5 and 9 pm or whatever hours are convienent for you, that way, you can entertain more people in a smaller space, as chances are they will not all come at the same time,,,,,,,, then send out invitations/or hand them out/or telephone people /or do a combination of all those,,,, to let people know,,,,,,,, just set out some snacks, appetizers, it doesnt have to be fancy, chips /cheese/crackers/dips are fine, and have a variety of drinks on hand,,,, and just plastic cups and plates and ice,,,,,,,,,,think of a variety of small things you might need in case people ask what gift you want,,, dont tell everyone the same thing !1 ,,,,, towels, spices , a toaster etc,, or if you drink, wine is nice, that way you will have a collection for when you entertain in the future,,,you really dont need games, unless you just want to,,,, its more a visit and greet then an actual party,,,,

It's usually an open house, similar to a cocktail party-but with less alcohol. Frequently on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. You have a stated beginning and ending time, say 2-5pm. You usually have finger foods or appetizer-type foods like finger sandwiches, miniature quiche, vegetable and fruit trays, cookies or petit fours. Things that people can munch on while they walk around and you show off the house. Punch, wine and beer are good choices for beverages. People will bring gifts. Have a table or desk or counter area where they can place them. You open them later. People will come and stay a bit and leave when more people come, usually. There are different customs in different areas. If possible, you could ask some of your husbands's relatives as to what is customary in the area where you live, and who should be invited.

It's just a little gathering, like an open house, to show off your new place. Invite your friends, serve appetizers.....even the stuff you can buy in the frozen food section would be fine. Bread and olive oil dip, cheese sticks, cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, etc. You don't play games....just hang out and socialize. Some people will bring you gifts, usually something for new place...a plant, etc. Definitely have one...it will help you get on your feet, and give everyone important to you a chance to see where you live.

Make sure to have plenty of snacks and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. Usually people just come by for a few hours, look at the apartment, bring a small gift for the house.

Just play some music, and enjoy yourself!

Make it an all day Sunday affair.Start off inviting your family, let them come and visit at say 11:00a.m. then tell your friends to come at 1:00 p.m then coworkers at 2:30pm...they wont all be there at one time that way. Eat and leave in Waves ... we do that when we have warming or get together.Clean up seems easier too between visitors.
have some finger food like those little sandwiches and veggies and chips and cheeses, ice cups, drinks ,napkins paper plates.ect ect.Maybe make or buy some sweet treats.

Get yourself registered at like a BedBath & Beyond or whatever, go pick out a bunch of great things, send the register info with the invites. Have the party at a neighborhood clubhouse in your neighborhood so you can invite everybody, more guests, more gifts!! Tell a handful of people to bring a dish instead of a gift, save yourself some $$$ =)

1 bedroom is probably small kitchen - use it to make cocktails, order pizza BUT most importantly, invite the neighbors so when it gets loud, they will be at the party and won't care to call the police.
& tell the neighbors it is the housewarming party so they know it won't be every nite when they are trying to sleep.

The best thing to have at a party is pizza, chips and dip, and soda. Yummy and cheap!
