A traditional Shaker hymn: Simple Gifts. It reminds us all that we are to be grateful for all things and not to take any daily joy for granted.

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
'tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
It will be in the valley of love and delight.

Refrain:

When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
'Til by turning, turning we come round right

'Tis the gift to be loved and that love to return,
'Tis the gift to be taught and a richer gift to learn,
And when we expect of others what we try to live each day,
Then we'll all live together and we'll all learn to say,

Refrain:

'Tis the gift to have friends and a true friend to be,
'Tis the gift to think of others not to only think of "me",
And when we hear what others really think and really feel,
Then we'll all live together with a love that is real.

Refrain:

A tune from the Broadway musical "Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris" called:"If we only have love" it brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it. It's so simple and moving.

If we only have love
Then tomorrow will dawn
And the days of our years
Will rise on that morn
If we only have love
To embrace without fears
We will kiss with our eyes
We will sleep without tears
If we only have love
With our arms open wide
Then the young and the old
Will stand at our side
If we only have love
Love that's falling like rain
Then the parched desert earth
Will grow green again
If we only have love
For the hymn that we shout
For the song that we sing
Then we'll have a way out
If we only have love
We can reach those in pain
We can heal all our wounds
We can use our own names
If we only have love
We can melt all the guns
And then give the new world
To our daughters and sons
If we only have love
Then Jerusalem stands
And then death has no shadow
There are no foreign lands
If we only have love
We will never bow down
We'll be tall as the pines
Neither heroes nor clowns
If we only have love
Then we'll only be men
And we'll drink from the Grail
To be born once again
Then with nothing at all
But the little we are
We'll have conquered all time
All space, the sun, and the stars.

Johnny Cash - I see a darkness

Well, you're my friend
And can you see
Many times we've been out drinking
Many times we've shared our thoughts
Did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got
Well you know I have a love, for everyone I know
And you know I have a drive, for life I won't let go
But sometimes this opposition, comes rising up in me
This terrible imposition, comes blacking through my mind

And then I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
Do you know how much I love you
Cause I'm hoping some day soon
You'll save me from this darkness

Well I hope that someday soon
We'll find peace in our lives
Together or apart
Alone or with our wives
And we can stop our whoring
And draw the smiles inside
And light it up forever
And never go to sleep
My best unbeaten brother
That isn't all I see

Basically it sums up how I feel - its me asking for help, me hoping that someone will save me. Its a dark, moving song.

Great heart..by Johnny Clegg

a broken love affair with a white south african lady

Lyrics:
The world is full of strange behaviour
Every man has to be his own saviour
I know I can make it on my own if I try
But I'm searching for a great heart to stand me by
Underneath the african sky
A great heart to stand me by

Chorus:
I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart
To hold and stand me by
I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart
Under african sky
I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart
I see the fire in your eyes
I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart
That beats my name inside
Sometimes I feel that you really know me
Sometimes there's much you can show me

There's a highway of stars across the heavens
The whispering song of the wind in the grass
There's the rolling thunder across the savanna
A hope and dream at the edge of the sky
And your life is a story like the wind
Your life is a story like the wind

Chorus

Guka 'mzimba (body grow old)
Sala 'nhliziyo (but heart remain behind)

Particularly for the gay reference!

"Nightswimming"

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.

in my heart.

when my daughter was born, love is all around by wet wet wet
was no. 1

i had a girlfriend for a while in 89 and sweet child of mine was at the top. she was only 17 and it sort of fitted.

my ex and i used to have a song that i'd cry to sometimes.

GLBT-related? Or just anything?

I like Jewel's "Standing in Deep Water". When I first heard it, I just couldn't believe how deep and truthful the lyrics were, and how they somewhat reflected on me and how my life can somehow become:

And you wake up to realize
Your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive
When you're standing in deep water
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
And when you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love
You wake up to realize your only friend
Has never been yourself or anybody who cared in the end
That's when suddenly everything fades or falls away
'Cause the chains which once held us are only the chains which
we've made.

Hokey? Maybe a little, but it still gets me- that one line about "your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive". That happens to us all sometimes, and we barely even notice it, I think.

Nina Simone singing Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and Mister Bojangles. The latter always makes me cry so i have to be careful when I listen to it. If i was a musicologist I could tell you why as it only her version off one particular album.

"the island" by paul brady. it's about the conflict in northern ireland.

up here we sacrifice our children
to feed the worn out dreams of yesterday
and teach them
dying will lead us into glory....

my dad sings and plays it with his guitar. i've only seen my older brother cry twice in my whole life. once was at his best friend's mother's funeral. the other was when my dad sang "the island" at the kitchen table last christmassy time. everyone should listen, and reeaallly listen...

ps: also "teardrops" by womack &womack. but thats a different kettle of fish altogether.
