It depends on your view of what a tragedy is. In a way it can be deemed a tragedy because of the death at the end, but in the way way he was liberated and he learned to love and that's all he really wanted anyway. His life, before he met her, was completely pointless and selfish, yet he died for someone else.

A tragedy is called so when the lead protagonist dies. If he/she lives, it's considered a comedy. Romeo & Juliet was a tragedy as both lead protagonist die. There are only a handfull of tragedies ever made by Hollywood, because movie audiences do not like when the lead good guy dies at the end, therefore he rarily does. Cruel Intentions would be considered a 'comedy' in the days of plays. As the lead prog. lives at the end. :-)
