its because the engine is smog exemp, like a military engine, and therefore just pipe to lead the exhaust away from the cab is required,so no muffler, cat smog etc is present.also the engines are designed as heavy duty as possible to prolong their lifespan and maximize reliability, after all, when a fire engine has to go, IT HAS TO GO. detroit diesel, cat, and cummins are the field leaders, and some small ones can have 4 cylinders, most have 6,and some have 8

The biggest difference between regular "trucks" and fire engines is that the fireman are allowed to use the jake brake(engine brake) within city limits, and if I'm not mistaken it is automatic on fire trucks, when they step on the brake, the compression of the motor is used to slow the engine and truck down, giving it that distinct sound when decelerating, but in fact most trucks with engine brakes sound exactly the same, although many newer trucks have mufflers on their engine brake to keep it quiet.

The other difference is most truckers don't make a habit of driving like absolute madmen, where fireman must.

Most Diesel engines that you are used to hearing are of a smaller size and have a different set up with the exhaust. Fire engines use the same or close to the same motor that you would find in most tractor trucks on the highway or in construction equipment the HP on one of these trucks is around 1200 to 1400 HP with 1500 lbft of torque. (They have to haul 10,000 gallons of water or fume at a high rate of speed.) They are big industrial motors. You never notice the sound unless you spend a lot of time around big trucks or construction equipment. When I worked out at the Airport the push tug that we used to push 747,767,777 L10's and MD-10 and 11's sounded just like a fire truck. It had a Supercharged Detroit Diesel motor in it. Hope this answers your question.

Fire Engine Sound

the biggest reason is the PLACEMENT of the exhaust.See on most vehicles with 855 cubic inch engines (think about 800 cubes for a second ,6 FOLGER'S coffee cans in a row)have exhaust pointed straight UP!firetrucks have them down or out and that is the biggest reason also they are under extreme load as some carry 1000 gallons of water which is 8000 pounds so they gear them LOW to get the weight moving and they are always speced with the highest horse power and freeest flowing exhaust-its a great recuiting tool also as EVERYONE wants to drive the FIRETRUCK!-lol

allot of fire trucks have a detroit engine, which is one of the best engines ever made. They have a deep sound, along with a huge muffler system..like maybe 5 inch or bigger. So, to answer the quest..depends on the engine !!
