You say they are great dogs and friendly to every one they will love the baby as much or more than you. You will have to be careful as the baby gets older the dogs may be very protective to the baby

You don't mention the size or breed. Some dogs are naturally aggressive like Shepard etc. The pecking order is all that matters to a dog. In their eyes you or the father is the alpha dog of the pack. The leader and provider.

All dogs whether large or small think of themselves as member of a pack or family. Hierarchy or pecking order in this pack is very important to a dog. The baby could be perceived by the dog as a threat to their pecking order.

At first, they will probably be very jealous of a new baby. Female dogs are sometimes very maternal to babies. Male dogs are usually very concerned about the pecking order and protective.

Give the dogs special attention. This is hard when you have a new one. Make feeding and play time a big event separate from the baby.
You have to reassure the dogs they are still #1 or 2 etc. Introduce them to the baby by smell. Most dogs all love human babies or puppies. However some dogs will think of the baby as a threat to the order.
Never have an uncasterated male dog around any child. Male dogs are very aggressive and can turn violent to protect their status in the pack/family. Even a golden retriever.

Above all never leave a baby or child alone with a dog, No matter how harmless you think they are.

Hope this is a help.

They wont have a problem with the baby at all. In fact chances are they will be very protective of the child. Dogs consider themselves part of the family anyway and they'll just see this as an addition. I dont think you have a thing to worry about.

When my daughter came home from the hospital i made sure that everyone else stayed outside, so it was just me, her and my 2year old border collie. I sat on the floor holding her and called him over to sniff her- all the time telling him he was a good boy and that mummy loved him. Then, still while olding bub I pulled out a new chew toy for him and made out like it was a present from the baby- I had read this was a good idea to do if you had an older child at home and seeing how he is my first baby I gave him the same consideration. My daughter is now 16months old and 'Jetty' (our dogs name), was her first word and is now her best friend. Hope this helps!

I agree with several of the answers you have already been given. Yes the dogs will grow to be protective of the baby - I haven't heard of one dog who hasn't, and I know LOTS of people with dogs. If you have folks with kids come over, make sure they're infants younger than one so that it's more of a 'real' simulation. My experience with our dogs when our children were born is that they were very loving and caring. Even when our sons would pat hard on the dog, or even take the dog's bone, they dogs did nothing. It's all about the dog's temperament, and it sounds like you have good dogs.

Put the nursery up way ahead of time to get them used to the way the house will look. Get a doll, and a tape, cd, or a video with baby crying sounds. It sounds weird, but try carrying the doll around and lying it on the floor in different places and whatnot. This will get the dogs used to the different noises and things they are not supposed to jump or chew on (namely the baby!) Good luck.

Have friends with children come over -- get a baby doll and hold it. Maybe one that makes cooing and crying sounds. You can also have a friend with a baby tape it crying......and play that when you hold the doll.

Ultimately, I am not sure if anything can prepare them for the "dethroning" that occurs when a baby arrives.

Most dogs are so cool when it comes to babies. They will either love or be indifferent to the babies. And actually they will probably be protective. But don't be scared, they recognize you as an "alpha" being in the household, and as such will recognize and respect your baby. Ignore the answer from SM M. They were probably pit bulls.

when you have the baby, you can start by letting them smell the baby blanket you had around the baby at the hospital, bring it home and let them smell it.

let the dogs see you put up the crib and let them smell it.

keep the dogs away from the baby, if you are not holding the baby. don't leave the baby and the dogs alone.

Maybe get a baby doll and carry it around with you when you are around the house. When you get a baby swing or bouncy chair set it up and put the doll in it and let the dogs get used to it.
