This may sound silly, but my cousin's hamster just loves to chew on those cardboard centers from the toliet paper and paper towel rolls.
Find a glue that is safe for pets, then proceed to make a mini castle out of those rolls and other cardboard. I would strongly avoid using tape or staples...the tape is plastic and if he ingests that or a metal staple he could have problems.
Your hamster will have a field day chewing it apart into confetti, and you will be amazed at how much he can munch.
Another thing you could make is a large origami swan or some other artistic item. (Remember that he will likely munch that apart too)
Finally, build him a little boat or raft and you could set him afloat in the bathtub, taking a few pictures of Admiral Hammie....Just don't leave him alone in the tub! The porcelain sides make it almost impossible for him to climb out and he could drown if he falls or jumps out of the boat.

That is the cutest question I've ever read here.
What would a hamster want... Aside from getting some nook nook, or other form of loving...
Does your hamster have a favorite food? Or is there some safe toy type thing your hamster likes?
I suppose you could make your hamster some wooden chew toys... they love to chew on wood (I guess its good for their teeth or something) - so you could take some bits of wood - use food coloring to dye them if you like (you might end up with a funky colored hamster tho') and give your hamster those.
If you want to be really innovative - make something out of wood that you're hamster can chew up...
Don't really know of any hobbies hamsters have outside of sex and chewing on things...
Hope this helps a little.
Cool question! I loved my hamster... he passed on...

A paper towl tube if you don't have one for the hamster already. It's cheap and most likely you have one around the house lol. The hamster can run through and chew on it, shred it to make the bedding more comfortable, and move it to where he'd rather have it lol.

On the commercials for Pet Co, I think, they have this hamster train thing. You put your hamster in the ball and set it on the little track and it runs around.

A pinata! Take a toilet paper tude, stuff some sunflower seeds inside and some other treats you know he likes and then fold the ends close. Either hang it on a low string or leave it on the cage floor for him to go "nuts" with!

A gigantic crawl-through tunnel system, like at McDonalds PlayPlace!
Seriously, I think they sell those, try PETCO, and that would rock.
