In order for water to freeze, it has to crystallize, which means its particles have to get into their allignment. Salt interferes with crystallization, so salty water has a lower freezing point. It also has a higher boiling point, because salt interferes with its ability to escape (evaporate). That's why when you boil pasta, you put a little salt in the water.

thank about it they use salt on roads to melt ice and snow so salt as the lower freezing point
