He's been living here over the past year, and we have grown close...he is leaving now and i have no idea how to keep in touch - I guess I am a bit ignorant in this department, have not had friends in other countries before. Are there cell phone plans that work internationally? for that matter, can i even text message him? How bout a web cam? how would that work? long distance calling? i want something more than just email!!!! HELP! and please give details, as i obviously have no idea what i am doing here...thank you very much, happy holidays!

Skype is pretty cool. Technically it's VoIP (voice over internet protocol). But it will let you make calls to telephones for about 1-4 cents a minute. just download at www.skype.com (you till need a headset, mic and speakers for this). You can also get him to doanload it and instead of calling his phone, you can call his computer. You can also do video conferences and do Instant Messaging. But you can also do this with yahoo messenger, i just use skype more often. Or, you can take it "old school" and write letters via postage mail. That's very intimate. Good Luck.

If your in the USA I can hep. My Gf lives in So Korea and we use MSN and Yahoo Messengers. Also web cams. Since we both have High Speed Internet they work fine. I also call her on the phone and very cheap too . Use the link below to find your price. It is best to get a card with 1sec billing. I use a card I buy for 50.00 I for 1427 minutes of call time and if i use a local number (not the 800 number) I get like 50% more Min's. There is a link on the site to find your local number.

while i think myspace is a good option, web cam is an excellent idea, you can both get one and then sign onto an instant messenger, yahoo im works well, this way you can type to each other (as good as texting) while u see each other. u can also write letters to each other, send cards, just to switch it up, my husband and i did all these things when he was deployed in iraq for a year and it helped a lot. good luck!

I don't know about the cell phones but if you and your friend each have a broadband internet connection I would use Yahoo instant messenger and hook up a web cam and mic and then you can talk and see each other for hours..
