Because it's FUN, and kids LOVE it!!!
Why do you see letting a child having an imagination, as lying? I think you should lighten up, and try to enjoy some of the fun things in life!
How completely sad for those kids whose parents don't play along! Don't all of you know that all of their friends have more fun at Christmas than they do, simply because their friends believe in Santa, and have a sense of magic at Christmas? It didn't HURT to find out about Santa...It was just another part of moving forward in life!

Christmas always meant more to me when I thought Santa visited while my brother and I were asleep. It appeals to children because of the excitement, and it is also a long-standing tradition. I know that when I have children, I'll continue the tradition.
One thing to make it easier...when my brother and I asked our mom and dad if THEY thought Santa was real, they would tell us that they "believed in the spirit of Santa Claus." They never came right out and told us that he was real, but it was good enough for us.

Santa makes Christmas more magical and exciting for kids.
As for hurting their feelings, its best to either let them figure it out on their own, or tell them at an age when they not really bothered by it anymore. That way no feelings are hurt! :-)

Because the christian religon has gone SO far apart, from whatever the point of their holiday is, to just make it fun, and for all outside looking in, get a good laugh.

It will ruin the christmas spirit if a kid knew Santa didn't exsist. I never met anyone who ruins all the F****** fun and say santa is fake....
